DNA Structure Flashcards
Nucleotide Structure
S carbon sugar; deoxyribose in DNA, negatively charged phosphate group, an organic nitrogen containing compound called a base: adenine, thymine, guanine, cytosine
Nitrogen Bases
Complementary pairs: adenine and thymine, guanine and cytosine
Hydrogen Bonds
A weak chemical bond that occur between hydrogen atoms and more electronegative atoms like oxygen, fluorine and nitrogen; can be easily formed and broken. Hold the complementary bonds together
Backbone
Made of a sugar and phosphate group and are joined by an ester bond which is very strong
Leading Strand
Orientated in the 5’ to 3’ direction
Complementary Strand
Runs in the 3’ to 5’ direction
Leading and Complementary Strand
Bond through their nitrogen bases, are oppositely orientated (anti-parallel) to each other
