DNA Flashcards
DNA Full Name
Deoxyribonucleic Acid
DNA
An information molecule that is the universal basis of an organism’s genetic material, written in a chemical code for the production of proteins by the cell
Epigenetic Factors
A chemical tag that determines the degree of coiling of the DNA around the nucleosome and thus gene expression
Genes
A region of DNA, made up of nucleotides, that codes for a specific polypeptides
DNA in Prokaryotes
DNA is stored in small circular molecules that are freely suspended in the cytoplasm. The chromosome can be found in a distinct region of the cell called a nucleoid
Plasmids
Small circular pieces of DNA, which can replicate independently of the cell’s chromosome; carry antibiotic resistance
DNA in Eukaryotes
The DNA is present in chromosomes that are linear pairs (diploids) and arises through sexual reproduction. One chromosome from each pair comes from the male parent via the sperm and the other from the female parent via the ovum; when the two pairs of chromosomes are combined (fertilisation), a zygote is formed
Karyotype
Displays the number and appearance of the chromosomes an organism has
