Ὦ ἀνόητοι Γαλάται
(Oh) you foolish Galatians
τίς ὑμᾶς ἐβάσκανεν
who has bewitched you
οἷς κατ᾽ ὀφθαλμοὺς Ἰησοῦς Χριστὸς
it was before your very eyes that Jesus Christ
προεγράφη ἐσταυρωμένος;
was portrayed as crucified
τοῦτο μόνον θέλω μαθεῖν ἀφ᾽ ὑμῶν·
I want to learn only this from you
ἐξ ἔργων νόμου τὸ πνεῦμα ἐλάβετε
did you receive the spirit from works of the law
ἢ ἐξ ἀκοῆς πίστεως;
or hearing about faith/the message about/of faith
οὕτως ἀνόητοί ἐστε,
are you so foolish
ἐναρξάμενοι πνεύματι
(that) having begun in the spirit
νῦν σαρκὶ ἐπιτελεῖσθε;
now (do) you finish in the flesh?
τοσαῦτα ἐπάθετε εἰκῇ;
Did you suffer so much in vain?
εἴ γε καὶ εἰκῇ.
if indeed it were in vain
ὁ οὖν ἐπιχορηγῶν ὑμῖν τὸ πνεῦμα
For does the one (God) who supplied you the spirit
καὶ ἐνεργῶν δυνάμεις ἐν ὑμῖν
and works miracles among you
ἐξ ἔργων νόμου ἢ ἐξ ἀκοῆς πίστεως;
(do so) by works of law or from hearing of faith/message of/about faith
Καθὼς Ἀβραὰμ ἐπίστευσεν τῷ θεῷ,
Just as Abraham trusted in God
καὶ ἐλογίσθη αὐτῷ εἰς δικαιοσύνην·
and was credited to him in/as righteousness
γινώσκετε ἄρα ὅτι οἱ ἐκ πίστεως,
so you realise that those from faith
οὗτοι υἱοί εἰσιν Ἀβραάμ.
those are the sons of Abraham
προϊδοῦσα δὲ ἡ γραφὴ ὅτι
for the Scriptures, foreseeing that…
ἐκ πίστεως δικαιοῖ τὰ ἔθνη ὁ θεός
God justifies the nations by faith
προευηγγελίσατο τῷ Ἀβραὰμ ὅτι
announced the good news before to Abraham, saying
ἐνευλογηθήσονται ἐν σοὶ πάντα τὰ ἔθνη·
all the nations will be blessed by you
ὥστε οἱ ἐκ πίστεως εὐλογοῦνται
so that those of trust are blessed
σὺν τῷ πιστῷ Ἀβραάμ.
by the believing Abraham/ by Abraham, who trusted
Ὅσοι γὰρ ἐξ ἔργων νόμου εἰσίν,
For all those who are from works of law/ all those who rely on works of the law
ὑπὸ κατάραν εἰσίν·
are under a curse
γέγραπται γὰρ ὅτι
for it is written, “
ἐπικατάρατος πᾶς ὃς οὐκ ἐμμένει πᾶσιν
cursed is anyone who doesn’t abide by everything
τοῖς γεγραμμένοις ἐν τῷ βιβλίῳ τοῦ νόμου τοῦ
which is written in the book of the law
ποιῆσαι αὐτά
and do them (literal translation/ might sound better to say “who doesn’t abide by and do everything…”)
ὅτι δὲ…δῆλον,
but it is clear that
ἐν νόμῳ οὐδεὶς δικαιοῦται παρὰ τῷ θεῷ
nobody is justified/made righteous before God by law
ὅτι ὁ δίκαιος ἐκ πίστεως ζήσεται·
because the one who is righteous will live by faith
ὁ δὲ νόμος οὐκ ἔστιν ἐκ πίστεως
the law is not from faith
ἀλλ᾽ ὁ ποιήσας αὐτὰ
rather/on the contrary the one who does these things
ζήσεται ἐν αὐτοῖς
will live by them
Χριστὸς ἡμᾶς ἐξηγόρασεν ἐκ τῆς κατάρας τοῦ νόμου
Christ delivered us from the curse of the law
γενόμενος ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν κατάρα,
by becoming a curse for us
ὅτι γέγραπται·
because it is written,
ἐπικατάρατος πᾶς ὁ κρεμάμενος ἐπὶ ξύλου,
“cursed is anyone who hangs on a tree”
ἵνα…ἡ εὐλογία τοῦ Ἀβραὰμ
so that the blessing of Abraham
εἰς τὰ ἔθνη…γένηται ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ
might be to the nations through Christ Jesus
ἵνα τὴν ἐπαγγελίαν τοῦ πνεύματος λάβωμεν
so that we might receive the promise of the spirit
διὰ τῆς πίστεως.
through the faith
Ἀδελφοί, κατὰ ἄνθρωπον λέγω·
Brothers, I speak according to human norms/standards
ὅμως ἀνθρώπου κεκυρωμένην διαθήκην
nonetheless, when a human covenant has been ratified
οὐδεὶς ἀθετεῖ ἢ ἐπιδιατάσσεται.
none can annul it or add to it
ῷ δὲ Ἀβραὰμ ἐρρέθησαν αἱ ἐπαγγελίαι καὶ
the promises were made to Abraham and…
τῷ σπέρματι αὐτοῦ
to his seed
οὐ λέγει
it does not say
καὶ τοῖς σπέρμασιν
and to the seeds
ὡς ἐπὶ πολλῶν ἀλλ᾽ ὡς ἐφ᾽ ἑνός·
as if to many but only to one
καὶ τῷ σπέρματί σου,
and to your seed
ὅς ἐστιν Χριστός
which is Christ
τοῦτο δὲ λέγω
but I say this
ὁ…γεγονὼς νόμος
the law, which came
μετὰ τετρακόσια καὶ τριάκοντα ἔτη
430 years later/after
διαθήκην προκεκυρωμένην ὑπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ…ἀκυροῖ
does not nullify a covenant previously ratified by God
εἰς τὸ καταργῆσαι τὴν ἐπαγγελίαν
so as to invalidate the promise
εἰ γὰρ ἐκ νόμου ἡ κληρονομία,
for if the inheritance is/comes from the law
οὐκέτι ἐξ ἐπαγγελίας·
(then) it is no longer from the promise
κεχάρισται ὁ θεός
God gave it freely
τῷ δὲ Ἀβραὰμ δι᾽ ἐπαγγελίας
to Abraham through a promise
Τί οὖν ὁ νόμος;
why then the law?
τῶν παραβάσεων χάριν προσετέθη,
it was added on account of transgressions
ἄχρις οὗ ἔλθῃ τὸ σπέρμα ᾧ ἐπήγγελται,
until the seed to whom it had been promised would come
διαταγεὶς δι᾽ ἀγγέλων
having been ordained by angels
ἐν χειρὶ μεσίτου.
through the hands of a mediator
ὁ δὲ μεσίτης ἑνὸς οὐκ ἔστιν,
but the mediator is not of/for one
ὁ δὲ θεὸς εἷς ἐστιν
but God is one
ὁ οὖν νόμος κατὰ τῶν ἐπαγγελιῶν [τοῦ θεοῦ];
so is the law against the promises (of God)?
μὴ γένοιτο.
it is not so/never/God forbid etc.
εἰ γὰρ ἐδόθη νόμος
for if a law is given
ὁ δυνάμενος ζῳοποιῆσαι,
which is able to give life
ἂν ἦν ἡ δικαιοσύνη
then in fact righteousness
ὄντως ἐκ νόμου
would be from the law
ἀλλὰ συνέκλεισεν ἡ γραφὴ τὰ πάντα
but the scripture enclosed everything
ὑπὸ ἁμαρτίαν,
under sin
ἵνα ἡ ἐπαγγελία ἐκ πίστεως Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ
so that the promise from faith of/in Jesus Christ
δοθῇ τοῖς πιστεύουσιν.
might be given to the ones who believed
Πρὸ τοῦ δὲ ἐλθεῖν τὴν πίστιν
before faith came
ὑπὸ νόμον ἐφρουρούμεθα συγκλειόμενοι
we were held in custody/imprisoned and locked up under the law
εἰς τὴν μέλλουσαν πίστιν ἀποκαλυφθῆναι,
until the faith about to come was revealed
ὥστε ὁ νόμος παιδαγωγὸς ἡμῶν γέγονεν εἰς Χριστόν
thus the law had been our guardian until Christ
ἵνα ἐκ πίστεως δικαιωθῶμεν·
so that we might be made righteous by faith
ἐλθούσης δὲ τῆς πίστεως
now that faith had come (genitive absolute)
οὐκέτι ὑπὸ παιδαγωγόν ἐσμεν.
we are no longer under a guardian
Πάντες γὰρ υἱοὶ θεοῦ ἐστε
for you are all sons of God
διὰ τῆς πίστεως ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ
through faith in Christ Jesus
ὅσοι γὰρ εἰς Χριστὸν ἐβαπτίσθητε,
for as many of you as were immersed in/to Christ
Χριστὸν ἐνεδύσασθε
you have put on Christ
οὐκ ἔνι Ἰουδαῖος οὐδὲ Ἕλλην,
for there is neither Jew (poss. Judaean) nor Greek
οὐκ ἔνι δοῦλος οὐδὲ ἐλεύθερος,
neither slave nor free
οὐκ ἔνι ἄρσεν καὶ θῆλυ·
there is no male and female
πάντες γὰρ ὑμεῖς εἷς ἐστε ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ.
for you are all one in Christ Jesus
εἰ δὲ ὑμεῖς Χριστοῦ
and if you are of Christ
ἄρα τοῦ Ἀβραὰμ σπέρμα ἐστέ,
then you are seed of Abraham
κατ᾽ ἐπαγγελίαν κληρονόμοι.
