GALATIANS 2 Flashcards
Then after 14 years
I went up to Jerusalem again with Barnabas
taking Titus along with me
I went up according a revelation
and I presented to them the good news
which I proclaim among the nations
but (I did so) privately
to those seeming to be someone/ seeming men of repute
lest perhaps I was running
or had run in vain
But not even Titus who was with me
was compelled to be circumcised
But because of false brothers secretly brought in
who had slipped in
to spy on our freedom
which we have in Christ Jesus
in order to/so as to/ so that they might enslave us
we did not yield…in submission
to them (even) for an instant
so that the truth of the gospel/good news
might remain with us
And from those reputed/supposed to be learned men
whatever they actually are
makes no difference to me/does not matter to me
God shows no partiality
those reputed men added nothing (to me)
but on the contrary
knowing that I had been entrusted the good news
of the uncircumcision/for the uncircumcised
just as Peter the circumcised.
For he who worked through Peter
for the purpose of apostleship of the circumcised
also worked in me to the nations
and recognising the grace given to me (literally the-given-to-me-grace)
James and Cephas and John, those who appeared to be/acknowledged to be pillars
gave to me and Barnabas
the right hand of fellowship
(so) that we might be to the nations
and they to the circumcised
(they asked) only that we remember/be mindful of the poor
the very thing, I too, was eager to do
But when Cephas went to Antioch
I opposed him to his face
because he stood condemned
before certain people arrived from James
he was eating with the nations
but when/after they came
he drew back and separated himself
fearful/fearing/awing? the circumcised/circumcision party
and the remaining Jews/and the rest of the Jews
joined in hypocrisy with him/engaged in pretence with him/acted in concert with him
(so) that even Barnabas was led astray
by their hypocrisy
but when I saw that they did not walk uprightly/ act in accordance
with the truth of the gospel/good news
I said to Cephas in front of everyone
if you, being a Jew
live like a gentile/live non-Jewishly/ “ethnically”
and (you live) not like a Jew
πῶς τὰ ἔθνη ἀναγκάζεις ἰουδαΐζειν;
how can you compel the nations to live as Jews?
We are Jews by nature
and not gentile sinners
but we, know[ing] that a man is not justified
through works of law except through faith in Jesus Christ
even we have come to believe in Christ Jesus
(so) that we might be justified through faith in Christ and not from works of law
because all flesh
will not be justified through works of law
but if, seeking to be justified in Christ
we ourselves are found to be sinners
ἆρα Χριστὸς ἁμαρτίας διάκονος;
(so) is Christ a servant of sin?
never/God forbid/may it not be so
for if I build up again
those things which I destroyed
I show myself to be a sinner
for through the law I died to the law
(so) that I might live to God
I have been crucified with Christ
For I live no longer
but it is Christ who lives in me
and the life I now live in the flesh
I live by faith in the son of God
who loved me
and gave himself up for me
I do not nullify the grace/gift of God
for if righteousness comes/is through/from law
so Christ died in vain/gratuitously/for no purpose
