Gait Deviations Flashcards
Trendelenburg
caused by weakness of the abductor muscles of the lower limb, gluteus medius and gluteus minimus.
Vaulting
A gait pattern where the swing leg advances by compensating through the combination of elevation of the pelvis and plantar flexion of the stance leg. unable to flex knee/hip
Hip Hiking
the contralateral pelvis elevates during
swing phase to provide for extra clearance for
the advancing leg, ankle does not plantar flex
Circumduction
the swing leg advance in a semicircular
arc, which creates extra clearance for
the advancing leg, usually seen with hip hiking
Steppage
A gait pattern in which the feet and toes are lifted through hip and knee flexion to excessive heights; usually secondary to dorsiflexor weakness. The foot will slap at initial contact with the ground secondary to decreased control.
