Bracing Flashcards
SMO
Supramalleolar Orthosis:
Indication: an intermediate orthosis when an AFO is too much and an FO is not enough. Varus/valgus control
Trimline: UCBL like with medial and lateral extensions just above the malleoli, full toe plate.
Mostly used with children
UCBL
UC Berkley Lab Orthosis:
Indication: Used to control flexible calcaneal defomities ( rearfoot valgus/varus)
Trimline: High medial/lateral flange, deep heel cup, extrinsic heel post, proximal to MTPs
AFO
Ankle Foot Orthosis:
Indication: primary function to control alignment and motion of the foot and ankle joint. Prevents or corrects deformity at the ankle.
Trimline: 1.5 inches below apex of fibula head, anterior/through/posterior of malleoli. Full/proximal to MTP footplate.
SAFO
Solid Ankle Foot Orthosis:
Indication: Provides max immobilization of ankle and foot in all three planes. Prevents hyperextension, foot drop, DF/PF (depending on the angle of ankle)
Trimline: 1.5 inches below apex of fibula head, anterior/through/posterior of malleoli. Full/proximal to MTP footplate.
FRO
Floor Reaction/Ground Reaction AFO:
Indication: For patients with little quad strength w/o knee instability.
Trimline: Anterior shell with posterior opening or SAFO with removable anterior shell. The anterior shell should have padding.
PTB AFO
Patella Tendon Bearing AFO:
Indication: For patients with problems with sole of foot (charcot, fractures, hard to heal ulcers). Uses weight bearing principles of PTB prosthesis to unweight foot.
Trimline: SAFO trimlines with anterior shell that goes up to the patella tendon for unloading.
PLS AFO
Posterior Spring Leaf AFO:
Indication: For patients with weak Pretibial muscles who usually exhibit foot drop/slap.
Trimline: Usually Medial/later trimlines are well posterior of the maleoli, but you can modify them at the ankle to gain more calcaneal control.
AAFO
Articulated AFO: Has joints
Indication: Can be made for patients with PF/DF needs and also controls varus/valgus calcaneal deformities
Trimline: Same as SAFO
