Zenker’s Diverticulum
- false (lacks muscularis)
- due to uncoordinated swallowing and failure of the cricopharyngeus muscle to relax
- occus in weak triangel
- symptoms: difficulty swallowing, halitosis, cough
- dx via fluoroscopic barium esophagography
**do not perform endoscopy bc it can rupture
XR: Barium enema
- dx conditions affecting the large colon
- can help identify polyps or IBD
- “lead pipe sign”
Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
- contrast injected into ampulla of vater
- XR perfromed after
- dx of gallstones
- tx: can be used fro stenting to improve damage
What is digital subtraction angiogrpahy used for?
helps to identify compromised arterial flow
What is the procedure of choice when diagnosing cholelithiasis?
ultrasonography
Compare CT and MRI
CT:
- faster
- excellent for calcification
- Iodine-based IV contrast
- radiation
MRI:
- not so fast
- not good for calcificaiton
- Gadolinium-based IV contrast
- no radiation
What are the steps to interpreting images?
- Solid organs (liver spleen, pancreas, kidneys, adrenal glands)
- Gallbladder/biliary tree
- LN chains
- Dudoenum, stomach, rest of small bowel, colon
- Fat planes, abdominal wall, bone
*look at whole image
Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome
- 3rd prtion of the duodenum is compressed b/t SMA and aorta
- causes: weight loss, cancer…
Nutcracker Syndrome
- left renal vein compressed b/t SMA and aorta
- symptoms: hematuria
