FUO Sepsis Flashcards
Define antigen
Any foreign substance that stimulates the body’s immune system to produce antibodies
Define antibody
A protein produced by the body’s immune system in response to a foreign substance (antigen)
Define Innate (Nonspecific) host defense
General defense that responds immediately to challenge regardless of previous exposure to it
Define adaptive (Specific defenses)
Specialized defense
Response to specific challenge
Define complement system
Part of the innate immune system; defense against pyogenic organisms
(it promotes inflammatory resp)
Describe the IgG antibody
- Fights bacterial and viral infections
- only type of antibody that can cross the placenta
Describe the IgM antibody
- Blood and lymph fluid
- First type of antibody made in response to an infection
Describe the IgA antibody
- Predominant antibody class in secretions
- Respiratory, GI tract, ears, eyes, vagina
- Protect body surfaces exposed to outside foreign substances
Describe the IgE antibody
role in immune responses to parasites & allergic reactions
Describe the IgD antibody
low levels in serum, role uncertain
Define fever
An elevation in core body temperature above the daily range for an individual
Define fever of unknown origin (FUO)
temperature greater than 38.3°C (101°F) on several occasions
What are the criteria for FUO?
(1) Temp greater than 38.3 (101) on several occasions
(2) more than 3 weeks’ duration of illness,
(3) failure to reach a diagnosis despite 1 week of inpatient investigation.
Define Sepsis
Systemic Inflammatory Response (SIRS) due to infection
Define severe sepsis
Severe sepsis plus hypotension
