Fungi Flashcards
What term is used to describe the way fungi feed
Extracellular digestion
What do decomposers break down
Lignin and cellulose
What is a mycorrhizae
A mutually beneficial relationship between fungi and plant roots
What are the tips that penetrate plant cells in mycorrhizal called
Hyphal tips called arbuscles
Where do endophytes live and what do they do
They live inside parts of the plant and make toxins to deter herbivores and defend against pathogens
What is an example of a parasitic fungi
Zombie fungi
What are the 3 ways in which fungi interact with other organisms
Decomposers, Mutalists and Pathogens
How does sexual reproduction in fungi occur
The gametes are Indistinguishable hyphal branches - compatible mycelia are attracted to eachother via pheremones, when they grow close enough they fuse
What do fungal fruiting bodies produce
Haploid spores
How does asexual reproduction in fungi occur
Molds produce haploid spores called condia which germinate into a new mycelium
What is the ancestor of fungi
An aquatic, single-celled, flagellated protist
What are the 5 main fungal phyla and give 1 detail on each - Chytrids, Zygomycetes, Glomeromycetes, Ascomycetes and Basidiomycetes
Chytrids - Flagellated spores are called zoospores
Zygomycetes - named for their zygosporangia
Glomeromycetes - Mycorrhizals with plant roots
Ascomycetes - FBs called ascocarps produce spores
Basidiomycetes - FB called basidiocarps produce basidiospores
