Fungal-like Protista Flashcards
protista
mostly single-celled organisms such as protozoa, simple algae, and fungi, slime molds, and (formerly) the bacteria
3 fungal-like protista
- Myxomycota
- Dictyosteliomycota
- Oomycota
Oomycota
water molds, not photosynthetic, arent fungi because cell wall make up is cellulose
example of oomycota
phtophythora infestans
phytophthora infestans
(oomycota fungal like protista) - potato blight
why was potato blight so impactful in ireland
people would eat around 10-14 lbs each day; this fungal-like Protista would turn potatoes into a goo; 1 million people starved, 1 million left to come to America
what is phytophthora infestans also famous for besides potato blight
disease “sudden oak death”
Plasmophora viticola
(protists) - grape mildew
ICK
water mold in fish tanks
Dictyosteliomycota
fungal-like Protista; cellular slime mold
why are dictyosteliomycota unqiue
at different stages of lifestyle looks like different kingdoms - one part looks like a slug, one part looks like a fungi
Myxomycota
acellular slime mold - NO CELLS
- oozes over stuff, back end “dries” and leaves a path
- if stuff starts to dry out they can stop, turn, and go in other direction
- for these not being advanced anatomically (no cells) they have an advanced ability
