Cells & Tissues Flashcards
Cell types
parenchyma - throughout body (epidermis, peridermis, ground)
3 types of ground tissues
1: parenchyma
2: collenchyma
3: sclerenchyma
Parenchyma
alive @ maturity
primary wall ( and smtimes secondary)
used for support, food storage
mitotically active
secretion, photosynthesis, respiration, healing
can convert to aerenchyma: large holes to help leaf float
Collenchyma
thickened primary wall
alive @ maturity
found in bundles - supportive but flexible
helps solidify outer edge of plant
Sclerenchyma
dead @ maturity
primary and secondary wall
2 types:
- fibers
-sclereids
Fibers
long, thin cell walls
high deposits of lignin - used for storage
found in stems, bundles
Linen - fibers from flax plants
Sclereids
short, branched
found in shells of seeds
very filled in & sturdy
protective coating
