Fundamental Motor Skills
Are foundation skills that provide the basis for the development of more sport specific movements.

Sport-specific skills utilise a range of fundamental movement skills in a sequence
The link between motor skill development and participation and performance
Fundamental motor skills are the building blocks to sport specific skills therefore if your fundamental motor skills are underdeveloped you are less likely to involve yourself in specific sports that rely these motor skills decreasing participation and performance as a result.
The development of motor skills will enable a person to participate; participation will lead to a greater development of skills and hence, better performance and participation
Motor Skills as a barrier
Poor fundamental motor skills will reduce performance, confidence and enjoyment in physical activity and sport
A lack of confidence in ones ability to perform or be successful in physical activity will impact their level of participation in sport and exercises
Motor skills as an enabler
Well-developed fundamental motor skills will increase performance, confidence, enjoyment and ultimately increase participation. The more a young person enjoys a sport and exercise, the more likely they are to further develop their skills.
