Classifaction Of Skills Flashcards
Gross motor skills
Involves the recruitment of large muscle groups, there is less emphasis on precision.
Such as running and swimming
Fine Motor Skills
Involves the recruitment of smaller muscles associated with movements requiring precision,
Such as the precise hand movements required when throwing a dart
Discrete motor skills
Have a distinct beginning and end, and are usually brief in duration
Such as kicking a ball or a netball pass
Serial Motor Skills
Are a combination of several discrete movements performed in a sequence to perform a larger more complex skill
Such as a gymnastics floor routine
Continuous motor skills
Have no beginning or end, sometimes however a finish line is assigned (such as a 100m sprint) but the actual motor skill is continuous in nature
For example running
Closed motor skills
Are performed in a predictable self-paced environment. External factors such as the weather, playing surface, team-mates and opposition don’t exist to impact skill execution. The skill being performed is internally paced and the athlete often tries to replicate the exact movement pattern each time the skill is performed.
An example of a closed motor skill is an indoor diving routine. In this example the diver determines the routine they will perform, when the dive will commence and it’s not affected by factors such as weather conditions, team mates, playing surface or opposition.
Open Motor Skills
Are performed in an unpredictable, externally-paced environment. In an open environment, the conditions are constantly changing and the performer has to adapt their basic skills according to these changes.
An example is Aussie rules footy, played on an outdoor oval which is a dynamic environment; changing weather conditions, it is externally paced with team-mates and opposition forcing the athlete to adapt their skills according to these changes
