A concurrent disease, accident, or adverse reaction that aggravates the original disease.
Name 3 types of bacteria.
Cocci, staphylococci, streptococci, bacilli, spirochetes, mycoplasma.
Name 2 viruses of particular concern for health care professionals.
Herpes simplex, & hepatitis B & C.
Name 3 animal parasites.
Protozoa (Mosquitos), helminths and roundworms, arthropods (lice and mites).
Define cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization.
Cleaning is the removal of soil through manual or mechanical means. Disinfection is the destruction of pathogens by direct exposure to chemical or physical agents. Sterilization is destruction of all microorganism in a given field.
Name 3 components of inflammation.
Vascular activity (swelling), cellular activity (swelling recedes), chemical mediators.
Name 2 proinflammatory chemicals.
Kinins, platelets, mast cells, basophils, prostaglandins, and leukotrienes.
Name 2 negative outcomes for chronic inflammation.
Can cause tendiniosis, hypertrophic or keloid scarring, ulcerative colitis, crohn disease. Sinuses and fistulae are possible complications of chronic inflammation.
Name 4 Cardinal signs of inflammation.
Pain, heat, redness, swelling, & sometimes loss of function.
