Functions Of The Skeletal System Flashcards
What are the seven functions of the skeletal system
Protection, attachment of muscle, leverage, storage of minerals, support framework, weight bearing , reduce friction at a joint and production of blood cells
One of the functions is protection, how does the body do this
The bones protect vital organs by using bones . For example, the cranium protects the brain, the pelvis protects the reproductive organs and the ribs protect the heart and lungs
How does the body attach muscles
Bones provide an anchor for muscles to attach to bones, tendons attach muscle to bone and the muscle pulls on the bone to create movement
How does the bones act as leverage
Long bones use a lever system that creates movement when muscles pull on the bones
What is storage of minerals
Bones store minerals such as calcium and phosphorus that enhance bone growth and meaning healthy bone density
What is production of blood cells
Bone marrow produces red and white blood cells, red carry oxygen and white fight against infection
How does the bones support framework
The bones support the weight of the body allowing us to stand up straight and attach muscles
What is weight bearing
Our bones are very strong and support the weight of the body, the main bones for this are the pelvis and tarsals
What is reduction of friction at a joint
Synovial joints secrete synovial fluid which reduces friction at a joint
