FUNCTIONS OF THE BLOOD Flashcards
WHICH ARE THE FOPUR COMPONENTS OF BLOOD
PLASMA
PLATELETS
RED BLOOD CELLS
WHITE BLOOD CELLS
PLASMA IS A (…)
LIQUID BIT OF BLOOD
PLASMA IS…
A PALE YELLOW LIQUID WHICH CARRIES JUST BOUT EVERYTHING THAT NEEDS TRANSPORTING AROUND YOUR BODY, SUCH AS:
1) RED AND WHITE BLOOD CELLS AND PLATELETS
2) DIGESTED FOOD PRODUCTS (GLUCOSE AND AMINO ACID) FROM GUT TO ALL THE BODY
3) CARBON DIOXIDE FROM THE BODY CELLS TO THE LUNGS
4) UREA FROM THE LIVER TO THE KIDNEYS
5) HORMONES WHICH ACT AS CHEMICAL MESSENGERS
6) HEAT ENERGY
PLATELETS ARE (…)
SMALL FRAGMENTS OF CELLS THAT HELP BLOOD CLOT
WHAT DO PLATELETS DO
1) WHEN YOU DAMAGE A BLOOD VESSEL, PLATELETS CLUMP TOGETHER TO ‘PLUG’ THE DAMAGED AREA
2) THIS IS KNOWN AS BLOOD CLOTTING
3) BLOD CLOTS STOP YOU LOSING TOO MUCH BLOOD AND PREVENT MICROORGANISMS FROM ENTERING THE WOUND
4) IN A CLOT, PLATELETS ARE HELD TOGETHER BY A MESH OF A PROTEIN CALLED FIBRIN (OTHER CLOTTING FACTORS ARE NEEDED TO WORK PROPERLY)
RED BLOOD CELLS TRANSPORT…
OXYGEN FROM THE LUNGS TO ALL THE CELLS IN THE BODY
CHARACTERISTICS OF RED BLOOD CELL
1) THEY ARE SMALL AND HAVE BICONCAVE SHAPE TO GIVE A LLARGE SURFACE AREA FOR ABSORBING AND RELEASING OXYGEN
2) THEY CONTAIN HAMEOGLOBIN WHICH IS WHAT GIVES BLOOD ITS COLOUR
3) HAMEOGLOBIN CONTAINS A LOT OF IRON AND REACTS WITH OXYGEN IN THE LUNGS TO FORM OXYHAMEOGLOBIN
4) THEY DONT HAVE A NUCLEUS- THIS FREES SPACE FOR MORE HAMEOGLOBIN SO MORE OXYGEN CAN BE CARRIED OUT
