Functions of organelles Flashcards
know all the main functions of every organelle
Cell wall function
Provide support and protection for the cell
Gives support through turgar pressure and storage of water, pigment, proteins, etc.
Central vacuole
Where photosynthesis occurs in plants and algae
Chloroplast
Chromoplast function
Gives colour’s to flower and fruits for pollination
Cilia function
Used for locomotion and/or sweeping fluid over the cell
Contractile vacuole function
Osmoregulation in animal-like protists
Creates environment for the processes taking place in cells
Cytoplasm
Microtubules functions
Structure and movement of cilia/flagella, organization, and shape of cell
Microfilaments functions
Cell strength, shape, movement, and pseudopodia function
Flagella function
Locomotion
Contains food particles engulfed by the cell
Food vacuole in animal-like protists
Golgi apparatus function
Modify, store, and ship products of the ER (often proteins)
Responsible for the production and storage of macromolecules
Leucoplast
The organelle that digests a cells food and waste using enzymes
Lysosome
Mitochondria function
Carrie’s out cellular respiration and produces ATP
Nucleolus function
Region in the nucleus where the ribosome subunit is assembled
Nucleus function
Controls cell function, site of DNA synthesisand RNA transcription (the cells genetic materials)
Regulates what goes in and out of celland separates the inside from the environment
Plasma membrane
Ribosome function
Synthesises proteins in the cytoplasm
Rough ER function
Intial synthesis and sorting of proteins for export
Smooth ER function
Lipid synthesis, and modification, detoxification, glycogen breakdown
Contains macromolecules for storage, transport or secretion
Vesicle
pigment name that gives green and where it is found
chlorophyll, found in chloroplast
pigment name that gives red/orange and where it is found
carotenoids, found in chromoplast
pigment name that gives blue/purple and where it is found
anthocyanins, found in central vacuoles
purpose of guard cells
regulate the opening and closing of the stomata (pores in cell walls)
