Define Functional Dyspepsia?
Also known as Non-ulcer dyspepsia
No known cause can be found of the symptoms
What is the aetiology of Functional Dyspepsia?
Sensation in the stomach or the duodenum may be altered
1/3 people with Functional Dyspepsia also have IBS
A delay in emptying the stomach contents into the duodenum caused by the muscles in the stomach wall not working as effectively
What are the symptoms and signs of Functional Dyspepsia?
a burning sensation or discomfort in your upper abdomen or lower chest, sometimes relieved by food or antacids Bloating Belching Nausea Bloody vomit Dark, tarry stools SOB Pain that radiates to your jaw, neck or arm Unexplained weight loss
What are the risk factors for Functional Dyspepsia?
Female
Older age
Use of certain analgesia (aspirin, ibuprofen)
Smoking
Anxiety or depression
History of childhood physical or sexual abuse
What is the management plan for Functional Dyspepsia?
Treat cause (e.g. clear H.Pylori infection) Acid-suppressing medicines Lifestyle changes
What lifestyle changes could you give to a patient with Functional Dyspepsia?
Make sure you eat regular meals
Lose weight, if you are obese
Stop Smoking
Drink less
