Give examples of microcytic anaemia
Iron deficiency
Thalassaemia
Give examples of normocytic anaemia
Sickle cell
Acute blood loss
Haemolytic
Name some megaloblastic macrocytic anaemia
B12 deficiency
Folate deficiency
Name some non-megaloblastic macrocytic anaemia
Alcohol
Liver disease
Pregnancy
If B12 or folate deficiency is suspected, what blood tests should be done?
Haematinics - B12, folate and ferritin
If iron deficiency anaemia is suspected, what blood tests should be done?
Iron studies:
Iron Total Iron binding capacity - transferrin Transferrin saturation Ferritin Soluble transferrin receptor
What kind of anaemia is caused in hypothyroidism?
Normo or macrocytic
When could Hb electrophoresis be requested?
When Thalassaemia or sickle cell anaemia is suspected
What marker is raised if there has been haemolysis?
Bilirubin
What is polycythemia?
Increased concentration of red blood cells in the blood
What are some causes of relative polycythemia?
Acute dehydration
Chronic due to HTN, smoking etc
What are some causes of absolute polycythemia
Primary = polycythemia ruba Vera
Secondary = due to increased EPO - renal cell carcinoma
Or due to hypoxia - COPD, altitude, congenital cyanotic heart disease
