A generic term in Friuli denoting a casual restaurant often attached to a winery; the word mean “branch” or “bush”, in reference to a traditional practice (apparently Austrian) of hanging a wreath of branches above the doorway of a farmhouse to signify that food and wine was for sale.

-somewhat used interchangeable with osteria or hosteria, the latter describing a sit-down restaurant one step down the price-and-formality scale from a trattoria.

Q

What makes Friuli whites more costly than other Italian whites?

A

The vineyard yields of the Friuli are among the lowest in Italy averaging 3.5 tons an acre. This is a result of the Friulian quest for high quality over quantity in their wines and also a reason why these wines tend to be more costly than other Italian whites.

23
Q

What are the differences between Collio and Colli Orientali?

A

While the adjacent regions of Collio (Collio Goriziano) and Colli Orientali have much in common, there are differences:

-The tiny DOC of Collio is distinguished by its slightly hillier landscape (colle means hill), as the DOC opted to include only hilly areas, while Colli Orientali includes many vineyards in the flatlands.

Though there are some great red wines in Collio, it is known primarily for its whites. Colli Orientali, on the other hand, is somewhat better known for its reds, particularly Merlot, Bordeaux blends, and Schioppettino.

24
Q

Why is there a slightly stronger market for Collio wines?

A

Many in Friuli consider the Collio a model appellation, with borders determined by history and geography and quality upheld by producers.
