What might dispatch do if access problems are anticipated or if the direction of travel is unknown when dispatching units to freeway incident?
Send companies from opposite directions
After being cancelled en route, when should fire units proceed in to the scene?
Only after being re-dispatched
What response mode should units be in when on the freeway mainline?
Code 2; alternating headlights and rear flashers ok
When is it ok to respond in the opposite direction of travel on the freeway?
Only at the specific request of DPS and it is confirmed that all traffic has been stopped
When should the first arriving unit report its identification, location and direction?
When within 1 mile of the incident
What should the first arriving unit report when they are within 1 mile of the incident on a freeway?
Their identity, location and direction
On multi unit responses, what should the later arriving companies do as they approach?
Level 1 staging, preferably near and on ramp to avoid premature commitment to the freeway mainline or access frontage road
When the first arriving unit is on scene, what should be included in the briefing from DPS?
Traffic conditions (how many lanes are open or closed)
Fire or no fire
Call for necessary help
What agencies should be included in the Unified Command on freeway incidents?
Fire department
DPS
ADOT
Local police if needed
What must command do when the fire department is first to arrive on scene?
Announce command vehicles identity, and its location in proximity to the incident
How should apparatus be placed on freeway incidents?
Between oncoming traffic and and operating personnel (protecting the scene from approaching vehicles)
On freeway incidents, who should be left the duty to employ warning devices?
DPS; Fire can employ rear lights, flares, reflectors, or cones as required or as directed by DPS
Who is usually left to watch traffic and set up warning devices until DPS arrives?
Usually the engineer
How should the apparatus be parked on freeway incidents?
At an angle between the scene and oncoming traffic, with air brake set and wheels at an angle to the side
What does the term “against the wall” mean?
Area around the median barrier wall;
AKA “inside shoulder” or “median wall”
In regards to freeways, what is “the curve?”
Usually refers to I-17 Durango curve
May also refer to the Broadway curve on I-10 or I-10 curve at Squaw Peak interchange
What is the “distress lane” or “emergency lane?”
Area between the median barrier wall and the number 1 traffic lane
What is the “gore point?”
Area around the freeway entrance and exit
What is the definition of “main lane?”
Controlled access freeway
What is the “mini stack,” AKA “short stack?”
Squaw Peak interchange to I-10, SR-51 and Loop 202
What is the “shoulder?”
Usually refers to area off the roadway to the right side, but could also refer to the median area
What is “the split?”
Maricopa interchange (I-10/I-17) traffic interchange was of the airport

I-10/I-17 interchange between 19th ave and 27th ave
