A fire which is in the initial or beginning stage and which can be controlled or extinguished by portable fire extinguisher, Class II standpipe OT small hose systems without the need for protective clothing or breathing apparatus.
What are the two standard exceptions to the 2 In / 2 Out rule at structure fires?
- When there is reported or suspected life hazard where immediate action could prevent the loss of life.
- When the fire is in the incipient stage.

What is the engineers role in the 2 In / 2 Out rule?
He/she is the second member of the team that should be ready in the event that he/she needs to enter the structure for emergency. However, he/she may be engaged in other activities within the hazard zone such as operating the pumper.
