Fractures and bony healing Flashcards
1
Q
Types of fractures
A
- greenstick
- impacted
- intra-articular
- oblique
- spiral
- transverse
- comminuted
- displaced
- compound
- avulsion
2
Q
Primary bony healing
A
- rigid fixation
- direct and intimate contact
- heals across fracture site
- slow healing
- no callus
- osteoclastic –> osteoblastic
3
Q
Bony Secondary healing
A
- most common
- Occurs with casting or exteneral fixation
- chondroblast –> fibroblast
- mineralization and bony replacement or cartilage matrix
- callus forms bridge
- more motion –> larger callus
4
Q
3 phases of secondary healing
- inflammation phase
A
- 1-2 weeks
- fracture hematoma
- neutrophils, macrophages, phagocytes, osteoclasts
5
Q
3 phases of secondary healing: reparative phase
A
- lasts several months
- chondroblasts/fibroblast lay matrix
- complete when stable
6
Q
remodeling phase of secondary healing
A
- last months to years
- osteoclastic and osteoblastic activity (Wolffs Law)
7
Q
Bony healing time frame: healing
A
- type and location dependent
- 6-8 weeks –> months
