FP - Microbiomes II Flashcards
What are the 3 main differences to human microbiomes caused by?
- Diet
- Medication
- Environment
What are 6 functions of the gut microbiome?
1) Metabolize undigested food compounds, providing additional energy to the host
2) Synthesize vitamins and amino acids that are used by the host
3) Inhibit pathogens from colonizing the host or causing disease
4) Train the immune system and help to adjust the inflammatory balance of the immune system
5) Stimulate the intestine to mature after birth
6) Contributes to energy homeostasis
What does Christensenellaceae assoicate with?
A low body mass index and lean phenotype
What is Colorectal Cancer (CRC)?
A genetic disease which affects parts of the digestive system
What does a disturbance in the microbial community lead to? (4)
- Impairment of epithelial barrier function
- Imbalance in epithelial self-renewal
- DNA damage
- Altered immune responses
What is fecal microbiota transplant therapy?
The administration of a solution of faecal matter from a healthy donor into the intestinal tract of a recipient in order to directly change the recipient’s gut microbial composition and confer a health benefit
