fossils Flashcards
why are fossils useful
- help us as evidence of evolution
what are some problems with fossils?
- hard to find
- hard to find plant fossils
- can’t assume everything has been fossilised e.g. jellyfish are too soft to fossilise
how are fossils made?
- remains of an ancient plant or animal turn into fossils
- old fossils can be ancient, but movement of ground pushes them together and causes a mountain to be created, overtime weathering can break down top of a mountain and fossil will appear on above ground
name the 4 types of fossils
- trace
- mold
- resin
- body
what are trace fossils?
footprints, egg shells, bite marks or 💩
what are mold fossils?
mold of an old organism in rock ▶️ organism dies but shape says in rock
what are resin fossils?
small creatures that get stuck in sap from trees and sun hardens them
what are body fossils?
teeth and bones that decay and something get into mould and hardens
what is speciation?
new species - same specie becomes different and die out
what is extinction?
the specie and DNA of an animal or plant dies out
whats one cause of extinction?
environment
what is large scale extinction called
mass extinction
what does isolation of things mean?
a physical barrier between the same type of animal/plant
