Distribution of organisms Flashcards
1
Q
where do organisms in general live and why?
A
live in different places because the environment varies
2
Q
what is the distribution of an organism?
A
where an organism is found
3
Q
give 5 examples of environmental factors that can affect where an organism lives
A
Availability of…
- temperature
- water
- oxygen and carbon dioxide
- light
- nutrients
4
Q
where might lots of daises be found and why?
A
found in the open ➡️ lots of light
not under trees ➡️ much darker
5
Q
what are the 2 ways that you can study distribution of an organism?
A
- measure how common an organism is in 2 areas ➡️ using a quadrat
- study distribution changes across an area ➡️ using a quadrat along a transect
6
Q
what is a quadrant and what do you do with it?
A
- square frame
- compares how common an organism is in 2 areas
- place quadrant down, count the organism
- place the quadrat down in a close area
- find the mean (add number of organisms divided by how many times you placed the quadrat down)
- repeat for 2nd area
7
Q
what are the 4 stages of a belt transect along a shore
A
- lower shore
- middle shore
- upper shore
- splash zone
8
Q
what is the ACFOR scale?
A
Abundant ➡️ 90% Common ➡️ 70% Frequent ➡️ 50% Occasional ➡️ 30% Rare ➡️10%
