Enzymes Flashcards
1
Q
what are enzymes?
A
enzymes are catalysts produced by living things
2
Q
what do living things have inside them going on all the time?
A
chemical reactions
3
Q
what do living things produce and what do they act as?
A
produce enzymes that act as biological catalysts
4
Q
what is a catalyst?
A
a substance that increases the speed of a reaction, without the substance being changed or used up in the reaction
5
Q
enzymes are all proteins , what are they up of?
A
chains of amino acids
6
Q
what is the process of the ‘lock and key’ hypothesis?
A
- an enzyme catalase with a section out called an active site, part out is a substance
- substance called substrate goes in to enzymes to be a full shape ➡️ then allows the reaction to happen
- reaction breaks the substrate in 2 ➡️ one parties H2O and the other O2
- this process is then repeated again and again
7
Q
what are the 2 types of enzyme reactions?
A
- catabolic
- anabolic
8
Q
what does it mean when an enzyme has become denatured?
A
it has lost some it’s original properties
