Fossil Fuels Flashcards
What are the 3 main fossil fuels?
Coal, oil and natural gas
What is coal used to generate?
It is burned in power stations to generate electricity.
What is oil and gas used to generate?
heats housing, powers vehicles and generates electricity
How is coal formed?
Millions of yrs ago, trees + plants died. They were buried and squashed under many layers of mud. Over millions of yrs, heat and pressure caused the plant remains to turn to coal. This is why they are found deep underground.
How is oil and gas formed?
When sea creatures died, they fell to the sea bed. They were squashed and covered with layers of sand. Over millions of years the the heat + pressure turned the sea creature remain to oil and natural gas reserves. This is why they can be found deep underground or in the bedrock of the sea.
Are fossil fuels renewable or non renewable and explain?
They are non renewable as there is a limited amount of them on earth and we can’t make more within our lifetime as they take millions of years to make
