Formation Of Spits Flashcards
1
Q
What is a spit?
A
Stretch of sand or shingle extending from mainland out to sea
2
Q
Give a brief description of the formation of a spit
A
- Beach material transported by longshore drift in direction of prevailing wind
- At a change in direction of coastline transportation continues
- Short term change in wind direction
- Deposition of larger, heavier storm material occurs
- Further deposition occurs extending spit into estuary
- Change in prevailing wind direction and waves cause the spit to curve
- Spit stopped from depositing further material as river outlet washes it away; due to flow from estuary greater than that of drift
- Salt marsh develops behind spit
- Vegetation helps stabilise landform
