Q

Give a brief description of the formation of a spit

A
  1. Beach material transported by longshore drift in direction of prevailing wind
  2. At a change in direction of coastline transportation continues
  3. Short term change in wind direction
  4. Deposition of larger, heavier storm material occurs
  5. Further deposition occurs extending spit into estuary
  6. Change in prevailing wind direction and waves cause the spit to curve
  7. Spit stopped from depositing further material as river outlet washes it away; due to flow from estuary greater than that of drift
  8. Salt marsh develops behind spit
  9. Vegetation helps stabilise landform
