Coastal Transportation Flashcards
1
Q
Give the 4 types of coastal transportation
A
- Traction
- Saltation
- Suspension
- Solution
2
Q
What is traction?
A
Large boulders are rolled by wave energy
3
Q
What is saltation?
A
Smaller stones and sediment bounce along coastline
4
Q
What is suspension?
A
Sediment e.g. sand is suspended within the wave
5
Q
What is solution?
A
Dissolved material within the water e.g. Salt
6
Q
What is aeolian transportation?
A
Transportation of sand by onshore winds
7
Q
Where is aeolian transportation particularly significant?
A
Sandy beaches with gentle gradient as tide retreats longer distance allowing time for sand to dry
8
Q
Give a brief description of longshore drift
A
- Waves approach at angle of dominant wind direction
- Wave breaks, swash carries material diagonally up beach
- Gravity acts upon backwash, moving material perpendicular to coastline
- Larger sediment requires more energy so is transported at slower pace, smaller particles transported faster and further (Resulting in sediment sorting; large material at top of beach and smaller travelling further downwind due to weaker backwash)
