Q

What will the leader call to abort the whole formation on takeoff? How does this differ to them carrying out an individual abort?

A

“Abort, Abort, Swift, Abort”

The first word you hear will be “abort”, not their callsign. This is the instant giveaway that it’s a whole formation abort

Q

What should you do if an aircraft aborts in a formation take-off?

A

If any aircraft aborts, the others should continue if safe to do so.

In case of vic, if lead aborts then no. 3 initially formates off of no. 2

Q

How do you signal to the lead that you’ve got a comms failure?

A

Wing waggle to attract attention

Then use SOP hand signals to indicate the nature of the failure

A/C with serviceable comms leads the recovery - U/S aircraft watches for hand signals and anticipates checks required

Q

How do you use HEFOM codes?

A

Wing waggle to attract attention and convey lack of comms

Raise a clenched fist to the top of the canopy (indicates HEFOM) and wait for a similar fist from the leader

Indicate system unserviceability by raising and lowering a clenched fist, each time increasing the req. number of fingers

Lead (or wingman) acknowledges by repeating the signal

Ensure sensible throttle setting prior to using hand signals

Q

What are your actions if you lose the leader in VMC?

A

Fly in to the last known clear and safe area

Inform leader, along with your height (and heading???)

Leader will ensure safe separation until the wingman is visual with the leader

Lead then briefs a rejoin procedure

A

Transfer to PFD

Increase AoB to 45 deg. + maintain for min 20s (lead will be using max 30 deg. AoB)

Inform leader - if safe to do so they will roll out for at least 20s to assist generation of safe separation

If climbing - continue
If descending - level off

Await further instructions from ATC or the leader
