forgetting Flashcards
define memory forgetting and what it can be caused by
the inability to recall or recognise something that was previously learned
this can eb caused by:
1. retrieval failure
2. interference
3. storage decay
4. motivated forgetting
describe retreival failure
retreival failure is the inability to retreive a certain peice of information from LTM
describe interfernce
it suggests forgetting is due to competeing similar information
what are the two types of interference
- pro active
- retroactive
describe retroavtive interfernce
new information interferes with the ability to remember old information
describe pro active interference
when what we laready know interferes with what we are currently learning
describe decay
the fading away of memory over time
described motivated forgetting
intentional or unintentioanl suppression of memories or thoughts from consious awarness to minimize emotional distress. it arises from a string motive or desire to forget, usually from a traumatic experience
what are the two reasons for motivavted forgetting
- supression - consious decison to forget
- repression - unconsious forgetting
