Application of plant sciences to criminal investigation
What is the purpose of forensic botany?
To link suspect from 1 crime scene/victim to other, linking first and second crime scene, linking item from crime to suspect/victim, linking item in suspect possesion to victim/crime scenes, linking items, suspect, victim to location
What are the fundamentals of forensic botany?
Plant successions, plant life cycles, stages of plant life cycles, accumulation and decomposition of matter, identify species of plant or pollen, profile of where plants grow, PMI, matter of death, crime mapping
What does forensic botany achieve?
Corroborating stories, building suspect profiles, determining peri-mortem fate, deposition period
What is succession of plants?
Some grow in 1 area and others in a different area
How do you collect in forensic botany?
Preserved between paper sheets in boxes, relevant info on box including location, large plants-collect sections, small plants- collect entirety and micro plants -place in folded envelopes
