Forces Flashcards
What is friction?
Friction slows down the moving object.
What does Hooke’s law state?
It states that as the weight added to a spring doubles, the extension also doubles.
What is upthrust?
Upthrust pushes object up in liquid.
What is air resistance?
The force of an object moving though the air that causes it go slow down.
What is driving force?
The force that is pushing or pulling something.
What is reaction force?
Stops things from falling
What is gravity?
Attracts the object to earth.
What 2 forces is also known as drag force?
Air resistance and water resistance
What is an independent variable?
What you Change.
What is a dependent variable?
What you measure.
What is a Newton meter?
Newton meters contain a spring connected to a metal hook. The spring stretches when a force is applied to the hook. The bigger the force applied, the longer the spring stretches and the bigger the reading.
What does a Newton meter do?
Measures force
What is static friction?
Static friction is the force needed to make an object start moving.
What is sliding friction?
Sliding friction is the force needed to keep the object moving.
Give an example of 2 contact forces?
Friction and surface touch
Give 2 examples of non contact forces.
Gravity and air magnetism
Name the 2 types of drag force.
Water resistance and air resistance
What is streamlining?
Streamline is making someone or something into the most slim way possible for e.g a cyclists tucks their arms in to go faster. And streamlining reduces air and water resistance.
What is lubrication?
Using oil or grease for e.g when you oil the chain of your bike the surfaces move past each other more easily.
What would you use to measure force?
A Newton meter
What are the five different things that forces can make objects move?
- Speed up or start moving.
- Slow down or stop moving.
- Change direction.
- Turn.
- Change shape.
What do balanced forces produce?
Not moving or moving at a constant speed.
What do unbalanced forces do?
A car is speeding up or (accelerating).
When does friction occur?
When two solid objects rub against each other.
What are 3 good things about friction
1 friction allows the tyres on a bike to grip the roads surface.
2 It allows things to start and stop.
3 friction also let’s you grip your hands to the bike.
Give 3 bad points of friction
1 it slows you down
2 limits top speed
3. Wastes energy
What is the interaction force of friction?
Driving force
What’s the interaction pair of gravity?
Reaction force
What does equilibrium mean?
When forces are equal and opposite they are balenced
What is weight measured in?
Newtons
What is mass measured in?
Kg
If you went to space would your mass chage?
No it always stays the same
Does an object have the same mass wherever it goes?
Yes but the weight will change
What is the weight and mass formula?
Weight=mass x gravity
