-Add ethanol and water to your food sample and shake.
-A milky white emulsion is a positive result.

Iodine test.
What is the method of testing for starch?
-Add a few drops of iodine solution into the sample.
-A positive result will turn purple/black.
What is the test used for proteins?
The biuret test.
What is the method for testing for proteins?
-Add sodium hydroxide and copper sulphate to your sample.
-A positive result will turn purple/blue.
What is the test used for reducing sugars?
Benedict’s test
What is the method to test for reducing sugars?
-Add a few drops of benedict’s solution to sample.
-Heat solution in water bath for 5 minutes.
-Positive result will turn red/orange.
How do you test for non-reducing sugars?
-Heat the solution and neutralise.
-use an indictor to show the solution has neutralised.
-Add benedict’s solution and heat in a water bath.
-Positive result will turn orange/red.
