What is digestion?
It is the breaking up of large insoluble food molecules into small soluble food molecules.
What are the two types of digestion?
Mechanical digestion and chemical digestion.
What is mechanical digestion?
Where muscles are involved in a physical process eg) Chewing, Peristalsis, Stomach churning e.t.c.
What is chemical digestion?
Chemical digestion involves enzymes.
What is an enzyme?
An enzyme is a molecule (protein) that speeds up a reaction (catalyst).
What is a catalyst?
A catalyst is a substance that speeds up a reaction without being used up
What are the seven food components for a balanced diet?
Protein
Carbohydrates
Fats (Lipids)
Fibre
Vitamins
Minerals
Water
Where are proteins found?
Meats, fish, pulses, tofu, insects
Where are fats found?
Oils, avacado, red meat, butter, cheese, milk
Where is fibre found?
Brown rice, brown bread, porridge, cereals, fruits
Where are vitamins found?
Fruit, vegetables, red meat, seeds, plant oils
Where are mineral ions found?
Certain meats, vegetables, fruits, supplements, salts

What is nutrition?
Nutrition is what you eat.
What is a balanced diet?
A balanced diet is having the right amount of nutrients. These nutrients are proteins, carbohydrates, fibre, vitamins, water, minerals and fats.
What are carbohydrates needed for?
Carbohydrates provide energy for your body. Active or growing people need lots of carbohydrates to sustain the energy they are using up.
