Digestion Flashcards
Mechanical digestion:
It is where muscles are involved in crushing and moving food through the digestive system e.g) chewing, peristalsis, stomach churning.
Chemical digestion:
Chemical digestion involves enzymes.
Types of enzymes:
Enzymes: carbohydrase, lipase, protease
Amylase / carbohydrase
This enzyme breaks down starch into glucose. Carbohydrase is produced by the saliva glands, pancreas, small intestines.
Lipase
This enzyme breaks down into glycerol and fatty acids. This enzyme is produced by the pancreas and the small intestines.
Protease
This enzyme breaks down into amino acids. This enzyme is produced by the small intestines, stomach and pancreas.
Bile
Bile is a chemical produced by the liver and stored in the gall bladder. Bile works in the small intestines and helps break down fats into smaller droplets for lipase to work.
Bile also neutralises stomach acid.
