Food Flashcards
What is food security?
“When all people at all times have access to
sufficient, safe and nutritious food to maintain a healthy and active life”
What are 3 ways of ensuring food security?
1) increase food production
2) increase access to food
3) reduce food waste (post harvest and from
consumers)
Brief History of GM crops?
Theory discovered in 1977
The first plant was produced in 1984
The first GM crops were grown commercially in the
US in 1994
First UK product was tomato purée in 1996
Soya bean, maize, cotton, oil seed rape are most
common
Sixty plant species have been genetically modified
as well as cattle, sheep, fish and insects
What is the relationship between the physical environment?
aspects of the physical environment such as : climate, geology, ecosystems and topography affect the soil, water supply, drainage and level of environmental hazard this affects human health, food production, energy supplies and settlement patterns these affect population size and distribution
What are impacts of increased resource consumption
- depletion
- pollution
- climate change
- damage to wildlife
- depletion of finite natural resources
Is global food production evenly distributed?
No it’s not sadly
Food production is determined by two main drivers, what are they?
Environmental capacity – influenced by the
physical environment, climate, water availability and
soil fertility and so on.
● Human capacity refers to population size (human
resources) and levels of skills, technology and capital
investment in agricultural infrastructure.
What factors have improved food production?
● The package of technologies referred to as the green
revolution, including increased use of new, high-yielding crop varieties and technologies. Irrigation,
fertiliser and pesticides increased yields for millions
of farmers, although with some negative social and
environmental impacts.
● An increase in globalised trade that addresses
seasonality as well as promoting specialisation of
production where it is most efficient.
● Investment in production in low-income countries
by TNCs and other organisations (governments and
NGOs) to increase productivity
