In the UK how many people are living with CHD?
In the UK, there are an estimated 2.3 million people living with CHD and around 2
million people affected by angina (the most common symptom of coronary heart
disease).
What are the main risk factors associated with CHD?
Most common are: alcohol use, tobacco use, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and obesity. In LIC’s undernourishment and communicable diseases also lead to CHD

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including CVDs, are estimated to account for 89% of total adult deaths in the UK

Over a fifth (22%) of adults in the UK consume tobacco

What are the impacts on health and wellbeing
Most common impact is angina – constant pain in the chest – this can be relieved with medication or sprays
Heart attack – is possible to recover if treated straight away- can lead a normal life
Bypass surgery can be offered to those at high risk
Rehabilitation – exercise, life style choices, relaxation and emotional support
Can lead to people having to take medication for the rest of their life- warfarin (thins blood) which may have side effects.

Health education is important in schools especially – promote healthy
diet, prohibit smoking and allow opportunities for exercise.

Number of people who die or are disabled by CHD could be halved with
wider use of combination of drugs at just $14 per year per patient
