Q

State 2 reasons why FM200 is safe, and 2 reasons why FM200 gas can be hazardous.

A

Safe:
Does not conduct electricity
Is non-corrosive & non-toxic

Hazardous:
In extreme heat like in a fire, FM200 can decompose to Hydrogen Fluoride, which is toxic
FM200 removes oxygen from the air to put out fires

A

Air Compressor
Main Engine (M/E)
Generator
Air Con
Fuel Oil Transfer p/p
Fuel Oil Refuelling p/p
Freshwater (F/W) p/p
Bilge p/p
Sludge p/p
Waste oil p/p

17
Q

Where are the locations of the T528/Mechanical Lever? Why do these locations need a Mechanical Lever?

A

Aft E/R and Fwd E/R:
The 6 bottles are split between Port and Stbd sides of the ship, making it time-consuming to activate all bottles in an emergency

All 6 bottles must be activated simultaneously to maximise extinguishing ability of the gas

CIC
The bottle is located inside the compartment itself, making it dangerous to try to access when the compartment is already on fire

18
Q

Describe the release by Pull Lever Activation Procedure(T528) procedure after prechecks.

A
  1. Pull down “Pull lever” cover
  2. Once cover is pulled down, causes all machinery n ventilation to stop
  3. Audio and visual alarm can be witnessed outside the affected compartment
  4. Pull the lever to release FM200 gas. No abort available
  5. Once the FM200 gas has been released, the flashing warning light will be a solid light and the audio alarm will stop
  6. Follow the “after extinguishing” procedure
19
Q

What is the FM200 Post Activation Process?

A

After 15 mins of activating FM200,
1. Restore ventilation fan and reopen all doors and hatches for that zone.
2. Install water driven fans to increase ventilation

After 15 mins of ventilation,
3. Enter zone with BA set & confirm fire is put out
4. Conduct gas test with Multi Warn to ensure air is safe
5. Restore shut down machineries
6. Reset T520 Panel, Replace all used FM200 bottles
