Flying Supervision Flashcards
What are the time limits on the normal flying day?
From the beginning of MCT to the end of ECT.
What is meant by MCT and ECT?
Morning and Evening Civil Twilight respectively. They mark the points at which the sun is 6 degrees below the horizon.
When is the earliest day T/O permitted?
Why?
No earlier than sunrise.
To minimise risk of birdstrike.
When is IRMs likely to be promulgated?
When the actual wx is unsuitable for ccts - e.g. less than 1000ft cloudbase or vis less than 5km.
When is CFFR likely to be promulgated?
When the wx is forecast to be unsuitable for ccts in the next hour.
What should you do to recover if wx unfit for visual recoveries and Valley have lost both PSR and SSR?
Conduct a radar to visual with another ATC unit (e.g. Swanwick or IoM) to get below the cloud then recover visually.
What sources of info on cloud base and visibility should be used when deciding the phase?
For phases 3-5, the worst of the TAF and METAR should be used.
For phases 0-2, the METAR may be used in isolation.
What should you do if you get a call from ATC telling you that the FOG has increased unexpectedly, and you would now land below FOG?
Divert to land at the nearest suitable airfield.
Note: in some cases, an emergency may be declared and the aircraft recovered to Valley.
State the conditions required for a Phase 0 departure.
Diversion location.
T/O limits for green and white rated pilots.
There must be a suitable diversion within 100 miles (iaw captain’s IR).
Green rated pilots: Vis sufficient to T/O by visual references.
White rated pilots: Min vis of 600m and min cloud base of 200ft. Sqn Cdrs discretion.
What is the minimum crash category for hawk?
Singleton
Formation T/O or landing.
Singleton: CC3
Formation: CC5
When Mona is used as a Div during Phase 5, and Mona is close to capacity, what option may the DP consider?
Requiring some aircraft to hold fuel for the secondary diversion
The TAF and METAR for a div are different. Which one should be used when a div is being selected?
The worst of the two.
When may two YLO1 divs be used?
Which recovery fuel should be used?
When they are at least 100nm apart, preferably with one outside of the prevailing weather system over Valley.
The higher of the two.
A civilian airfield has issued a TAF stating visibility less than 5km. How low can the actual visibility go before a new TAF is issued?
1500m
When do civilian airfields report lowest visibility as well as prevailing visibility?
When the lowest visibility is less than 50% of the prevailing vis, or lowest vis is less than 1500m.
