Q

Why do thin bicycle tires require more pressure in them than thick car tires even though cars weigh more than bikes.

A

Pressure is the force that is divided over a particular area. Since bicycle tires tires do not have much area in contact with the ground the require a greater pressure to exert enough force to keep from flattening.

Which of the following substances are fluids?

Carbon Dioxide,Iron, Molten Steel, Nitrogen, Plastic, Soda,

A

Fluids have the ability to flow and change shape. They may, but do not need to have a definite volume.

Q

Explain how a hydraulic system like on a backhoe works?

A

It multiplies force through moving a liquid through a confined space. According to Pascals Principle that pressure is transmitted in all directions through the fluid.

Q

How do airplane wings work?

A

The air that flows over the top of the wing travels a larger distance and moves faster than the air that moves under the wing. This creates less pressure on top of the wing creating an upward lift force.
