Chemical bond vocabulary Flashcards
An atom that has a net positive or negative charge.
Ion
A model of an atom in which a dot represents a valence electron.
Electron Dot Diagram
An ion with a positive charge.
Cation
An ion with a net negative charge.
Anion
The force that holds atoms or ions together (with each other).
Chemical Bond
The force that holds cations and anions together.
Ionic Bond
A notation that shows what elements a compound contains and the ratio of the atoms or ions in that compound.
Chemical Formula
The energy that allows electrons to overcome the attraction of the protons.*
Ionization Energy
Solids whose particles are arranged in a lattice structure.
Crystal
A chemical bond in which two atoms share a pair of valence electrons.
Covalent Bond
A neutral group of atoms that are held together by one or more covalent bonds.
Molecule
A covalent bond where electrons are not shared equally.
Polar Covalent Bond
A covalently bonded group of atoms that has a net negative or positive charge, and acts as a unit.
Polyatomic Ion
The attraction between a metal cation and the shared electrons that surround it.
Metallic Bond
A mixture of two or more elements. At least on of which is a metal.
