chemical Reactions Flashcards
The new substances that are formed as a result of a chemical change.
Product
The substances that undergo a change in a chemical reaction.
reactant
A representation of a chemical reaction in which the reactants and products are expressed as formulas.
Chemical Equation
A number that is before the chemical formula in a chemical equation that represents the number of molecules or atoms in that equation.
Coefficient
6.02 time 10^23 of something.
Mole
The mass of one mole of a substance.
Molar Mass
A reaction in which two or more substances react to form a single substance.
Synthesis Reaction
Asking someone to dance.
A reaction where a compound break down into two or more substances.
Decomposition Reaction
Stop Dancing
A reaction where one element (or polyatomic ion) takes the place of another element (or polyatomic ion).
Single Replacement Reaction
May I take this dance?
A reaction where two different compounds exchange positive ion and form two new compounds.
Double Replacement Reaction
Switch dance partners.
The energy stored in the chemical bonds of a substance.
Chemical Energy
If energy goes into a reaction that energy is stored in the bonds of the product. Energy cannot be created or destroyed.
A reaction of a carbon containing molecule and oxygen that produces carbon dioxide and water.*
Combustion Reaction
A reaction that involves the loss and gain of electrons.
Oxidation-Reduction Reaction
In Oxidation an electron is lost. In Reduction an electron is gained. It seems backwards because electrons have negative charges.
A reaction where energy is released.
Exothermic
Exo- Outside Therm- Heat
A reaction where heat is absorbed.
Endothermic
Endo-Inside Therm- Heat
The energy that is required to start a chemical reaction.*
Activation energy
Even exothermic reaction have an activation energy. Otherwise those molecules would be too unstable to exist.
Tell how fast or slow a reaction is occurring.
Reaction Rate
A substance that speeds up a chemical reaction without being a part of the actual reaction.
Catalyst
Enzymes are catalysts in living things that speed up reactions to a speed that allows life to exist.
A state where the forwards and backwards paths of a chemical reaction are the same.
Equilibrium
This term is used in other places besides chemistry.
The amount of product and reactant are constant, but the reaction continues just equally in both directions.
A reaction that can run both ways simultaneously.
Reversible Reaction
