Fluid mosaic model (phospholipids) Flashcards
Hydrophilic
A molecule attracted to water molecules and tends to be dissolved by water
Hydrophobic
A molecule not attracted to water or are repelled by water
Phospholipids
Are amphipathic molecules, which means that they have both hydrophobic (non-polar) head and a hydrophilic (polar regions) tail
Sphingolipids
Very important in signal transduction and cell recognition
Are a class of lipids containing a backbone of spingoid bases rather then glycerol
Spingoids
Are a set of allosteric amino alcohols
Where do phospholipids come from
Synthesis occurs at the interface of the cytosol and the outer endoplasmic reticulum membrane which has all the molecular machinery (enzymes) for synthesis distribution
