fluid mechanisms Flashcards
fluid mechanisms
concerned with movement of liquids and gases
drag force
slows something down
what are the two types of drag
surface drag-relates to friction between surface of an obejct and fluid environment
swimmers wear specialsied clothing and shave off body hair from arms to reduce surface drag
form drag-e.g swimmer has to create the slimmest and straigthest form when move through water to reduce form srag
factors that reeduce and increase drag
velosity of moving bdy-greater the velocity of the body, the greater the drg force
try to reddcue by stremalining
cross sectional area of body-large cross sectional area of body, increases drag
reduce cross secitonal area by crouching low over handlebars rather then sitting up straight
shape and surfe more stremalined aaerodynmaic shape, reduces drag
bernouli principle
when discus thrown, experinces an upward lift force
lift force enables discus to stay in air for longer, therefore, increaseing horizontal distance it travels
more lift projectile has, the longer it will stay in air for and further the horizontal distance travelled
higher pressure below discus creates an upward lift force, allowing disucs to stay in aur for longer, greater horzitntal distance travelled
down ward lift force
such as skiers, cylist and racing cars
happens because air that travels over op of car travles u8u8j8uj
upward lift force
air that travles over top has to travl longer distance
faster veloicty and therefore lower pressure
below-has less distance to cover so travels at slow velocity and high pressure
downward lift forec
air that ravels above has to trvale shorter diatnce so will trvale at sloweer velocity but high pressure
air that travles
