Awareness is the prime mover of all that we know, see, and feel; and once we become aware of that, our lives will flow effortlessly like a river merging with the sea of all possibilities.

Q

Knowledge is the new god. We feel that if we know about something, then we own it and can control it. And if we can control a thing, we can either use it to further our knowledge and increase control or protect ourselves from harm—both real and imagined. So our collective thinking goes something like this: If we increase our knowledge about something, then we can increase our control over it. If we increase our control over a thing, we can use it for further knowledge or eliminate it as a threat to our safety and continued search for knowledge. Do you see the subtle insanity intimately woven into the very fabric of our thinking? The question we should be asking ourselves is not: How can I get more control? The primary question that every one of us should entertain is: How can I be free of the need to control?

A

The need to control comes from the feeling that control is needed. That is, we feel out of control. The feeling may or may not be conscious. In fact, most often it is not. But that subtle, unconscious need to be in control fuels most of our desires beyond mere survival and basic comfort.

I always have two awarenesses and the ratio of primary and secondary is always my choice. I have the relative and the absolute.

A

Quantum physics tells us that there are two sides to life: (1) the field of form and energy, and (2) the Nothing that it all comes from.

What’s the big deal? Well, it turns out that Nothing is not empty. Now stick with me here; this is where it gets interesting. All the things of creation—star dust and antimatter and ladybugs and sweet dreams—exist in the relative world of form and energy.

Its first activity was thinking. Its first thought was about itself. What else was there to think about? This first thought created the sense of Self, the unbounded essence you know as “I.” Then Nothing thought about all the really neat things it could create, which is when Nothing became something. Genesis further observes: “And the Spirit of God moved upon the waters. And God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light.” Taittiraya Upanishad also informs us: “From non-existence came Existence. From itself Existence created the Self. Thus, it is called the Self-Made.” So you see, this idea of Nothing creating everything has been around for a while. And there is a reason for that. When you add the idea of Nothing with the experience of Nothing, it has a most remarkable effect on us. It removes suffering. That’s right. Nothing eradicates anguish, misery, and distress. It balances disharmony of every kind and invigorates the body and mind. It is truly the magic bullet that targets every malady and madness of humankind. And it does so effortlessly, eliminating the need for struggle and strain. One size fits all. So, when the ego goes out to look for fulfillment in a new relationship or a new car, it had better bring along Nothing, or it will end up with something it doesn’t want. Suffering. It is the mind’s attachment to them that creates the torment.

That somewhere is actually nowhere. In other words, the source of thought is the same as the source of all created things, which I talked about in the previous chapter. Thought comes from Bohm’s implicate order, the “void,” the Nothing. I’d like to borrow an analogy from Maharishi Mahesh

All there is really is consciousness and awareness.

A

Knowing: When the Self becomes aware of itself; the transition from knowing to Knowing is Self-awareness. Knowing tenderly nurtures, guides, and protects. This is what is called intuition—the tender expression of the Self reflected in the mind. Intuition is Knowing without analysis and logic, while it enriches and supports both. Intuition is Knowing that Nothing has everything under control. Knowledge: Knowledge is the result of gathering data, which increases one’s understanding. Knowledge is a synthesis of comprehension and experience. It is relative and changes with time and circumstances. Knowledge is ignorance.

27
Q

Humanity always has put the cart before the horse—identifying as a body, a thing one appears to be conscious of, instead of as Consciousness Itself. To mistakenly identify as a mere body, as a physical self which can make errors, be sick or poor, must elevate itself and “get there,” is dead wrong. It completely ignores Consciousness in favor of a mere thing one appears to be conscious of. It is a cut-off, entirely false self. Any book or teaching that starts out with such a false separate “you,” having a second-rate life and consciousness that must “work up to,” has a premise that is, frankly, backwards.

A

Read these pages as if It were Consciousness, the One Self, talking to Itself. This is the only “viewpoint” that is valid, true, and actually operating because again, the Self is the only One being conscious and alive here, now, so this can even be read! That may take getting used to—chances are you’ve never read anything written this way.

28
Q

reverse the mistaken identification from body to Consciousness.

A

If you were conveying a new “viewpoint”—that of Consciousness, not a body—you’d need a brand new way of expressing it. Using the same old words would leave the reader no choice but to apply old meanings, and would be just a rehash of the same old thing.

Q

It takes the passing of time to think thoughts. It takes time to experience sensations: to see sights, hear sounds, and to touch, taste and smell. It takes time to feel emotions, and even to have psychic experiences. Yet all such things that move and pass in time are only what you seem to be aware of. None of that is Awareness Itself. Awareness as It is being isn’t passing in the flow of time with those things. Pure Awareness is changelessly present.

A

Start by making a clear distinction between this you that is conscious and the many things you appear to be conscious of.

31
Q

Start by making a clear distinction between this you that is conscious and the many things you appear to be conscious of.

A

Stop reading a moment to closely notice this book. Slowly notice its color. Then notice the book’s size—its dimensions of width and height. Don’t mentally comment about it; just be aware of it. Then in the same way, take a few moments and quietly be aware of your body as it holds the book. Next, slowly take in the room in which the body is seated (assuming the body is in a room), and any objects in the room. Stop reading now, and do it. Just silently be aware of all these things for awhile without thinking about them. It’s like being a clear glass camera lens that impartially includes everything in its field of view. There is no thought or judgment about the things in the view, no emotional attachment. Nor does the clear glass assume it is any of the things—they all just appear to be “included.” Likewise now, each item, even the body, is simply a thing you appear to be aware of.

32
Q

When you say, “I am hungry,” you are identifying both sides of your existence: the unchanging “I” and the changeable “me.” You are saying that the “I” part of you is observing the “me” part of you being hungry. “I” is like a silent witness just enjoying the scenery of your life. “Me” is the scenery. “I,”

Q

Perception of self

A

And perception of reality!

40
Q

Perception is how you fill your awareness. We perceive through our senses: sight, taste, touch, smell, and hearing. When you see a flower, the image of the flower is thrown onto the retina of your eye. The perception of the flower on the retina is changed into electrical impulses which are transmitted to your brain. Your brain translates the electrical impulses into an image of the flower you are looking at. The whole process is automatic and instantaneous. In this case you would see the flower but without awareness; you would not know that the flower exists. If your eye were a camera then perception would be the procedure of taking the picture– that is, getting the image of the flower through the lens and recorded on the memory card. In this analogy, awareness is the light that makes the whole process possible. Without light there is effectively no image of the flower and therefore no perception of the flower. As far as you are concerned, it does not exist.

A

There are many shades of awareness. You can be alert, tired, distracted, drugged, etc. If we think of awareness as light, then the different kinds of awareness represent different intensities of light. Let’s say that the brightest light possible registers 10 on our “light/awareness” scale. Everyday common consciousness would register a 4 or 5 on our scale of 0 to 10. This would be like using your camera to take a picture outdoors on a cloudy day. Depending on the degree of fatigue, awareness would be a 2 or 3. This would be like taking a picture at dusk just after the sun has set.

41
Q

What do I really want.

A

The purest awareness 10

42
Q

This discovery is a way to perceive the purest awareness, a 10 on our awareness scale. Having the purest awareness is like taking a picture under perfect conditions in full daylight. When we perceive through pure awareness it gives us the truest, most vibrant reflection of life. It frees us from having to struggle to see life clearly. It gives us the best chance for appreciating the world within which we live. So what is pure awareness? Pure awareness is nothing! At least, as far as your mind is concerned, pure awareness does not exist. That’s because it has no form. Like the daylight in our camera analogy, pure awareness is everywhere but we are basically unaware of it. We don’t actually see light. We look right through it, don’t we? Because light is present we can see the objects it illumines, but light itself remains hidden. So it is with the nothing of pure awareness.

A

Instantly, the moment you switched your awareness from thoughts to nothing, relaxation and inner peace began growing within you. Nothing is the screen onto which your thoughts are projected.

A

46
Q

All the different conditions of your mind, thoughts, emotions, memories, perceptions, etc., depend on Eufeeling.

A

The value of my discovery is realized in two ways: how to instantly experience this great mental stillness and how to stay there even during very vigorous activity.

47
Q

We all know that too much mental activity actually interferes with the success of activity. When the daily goings- on of talking, working, learning, and loving flow from a quieter state of mind, those activities become easier and yield far more fulfilling and successful results. This realization by itself is not new by any stretch of the imagination. After all it is the foundation for meditation, healing chronic diseases, the creative arts, and crafting the perfect jump shot. During my revelation I discovered that one can actually “do nothing” mentally, a kind of getting out of the way and letting Nature take its course, after which remarkable things begin to happen. I saw the entire universe as non- moving, frozen in time. I didn’t know it at the time but later research revealed that this perception of non- movement had been established theoretically by Einstein and others.

A

Now here is the exciting part! Along with the perception of an absolutely non- moving universe came the technique of non- doing: how to create fulfillment, fun, and success starting by doing nothing at all. It turns out that every one of us already has timelessness built into our genes. Timelessness is the touchstone for deepest success.

48
Q

Two things that matter.

A

Mental activity - thinking
And
Attentional activity - focusing

49
Q

The emotional self is what matters and it is determined by what I am emotionally identifying with.

A

And as

50
Q

Every created thing is made of two parts: energy and form. The most basic form of energy is the wave. Waves combine to make subatomic particles which combine to make atoms, molecules, ending with the book you hold in your hand.

Even thoughts and emotions have energy and form. They are just not as tangible as other objects.

A

All form has energy and all energy has form. You have already identified a “field” of life that has neither energy nor form when you perceived pure awareness. That means that pure awareness is not created. Pure awareness is the progenitor of all created things whether they be tangible, ethereal, or otherwise. So if pure awareness has no form or energy what does that make it? We have said that it is nothing. That means that pure awareness contains “no thing” or no form. Pure awareness also contains no energy. Remember an object has form and energy. So a non- object has no form and no energy. The word we use for no form is nothing. The word we use for no energy is stillness.

When you talk about pure awareness you can say that it is complete nothing or you can say that it is absolute stillness. However, when perceiving pure awareness it is important to note that your mind considers nothing uninteresting, not worthy of its exalted attention. In a very abstract yet holistic way, stillness seems to draw your mind into it. That is why the EuStillness Technique works so quickly and completely to bring about all- inclusive life changes. Simply put, we begin to see unity where diversity once reigned. And as we will soon discover, it is the ability to see unity, the coming together of two things to create greater harmony, that will save our collective bacon. So the EuStillness Technique offers us the perception of unity which automatically and instantly leads to greater success in life. We are not talking about the usual lifetime of work and study that has been subscribed to awareness of unity in the past. The “shift” is immediate, and then it’s just a matter of letting the pieces fall into place. All things considered, this is pretty amazing. Here’s what I mean about the immediate influence of perception. When you hear screeching brakes and turn to see a dog being hit by a car, you immediately experience both physical and emotional changes, don’t you? Physically you will have a quickening pulse, increased cardiac output, contraction of fight- or- flight musculature, hormonal shifts including a major squirt of adrenaline, dilated pupils, and much more. Emotionally you may experience fright, anxiety, confusion, anger, helplessness, compassion, etc. Now, consider watching a beautiful sunset. Your body becomes relaxed and your mind treasures an inner tranquility garnished with a dash of awe. The point is, all these changes take place automatically and instantly. You don’t have to try to create them, do you? You don’t need imagination, faith, or belief for perception to work. You don’t even need to understand how it works. Your body and mind already know everything that needs to be known.

51
Q

What is EuStillness and why is it beneficial? The initial stroke, that of going inward, is to first experience the nothing of pure awareness and its first glimmer of individuality in the mind, Eufeeling. Contained within Eufeeling is unending stillness. You will discover this endless stillness when you do the EuStillness Technique. The perception of this profound stillness we call EuStillness. (Also known as Pure Eufeeling.) EuStillness wakes up the finest level of our understanding mind, our intellect, the part of us that decides, among other things, what to do and when to do it, right from wrong and good from bad. This “waking up” of your intellect within EuStillness lets you see wholeness in the diversity of life. I know this may sound a little counterintuitive at this point, but when you perceive EuStillness, the stillness that is at the core of every created thing including stars, cars, and candy bars, you grasp wholly the unity of all life. EuStillness is the glue that holds your world together. The final stroke of the EuStillness Technique is external. At this point we turn our gaze outward and inspect the phenomenal world we inhabit. Through the EuStillness Technique we observe the balancing and counterbalancing influence of EuStillness. We find and appreciate the common ground between opposites like pain and pleasure, man and woman, good and bad. Everything in your life will find its natural place. You will find your place in the great scheme of things and at last feel at home.

A

So how does the EuStillness Technique work? Well, not by conventional laws, that is for sure. When you think about it, a technique is how to do something, isn’t it? Well, how can you do something to do nothing? Of course, that seems impossible. It seems to make sense that you cannot generate an activity of non- activity. This is the very reason many meditation and spiritual techniques take so long to yield results. They expect the student to create inner stillness or become an unmoving observer by doing something, like creating positive thoughts, concentrating on a word or idea, or bending and breathing in just the right way. This is the very opposite of their goal of inner peace or being the silent observer. Movement, mental or otherwise, does not lead to stillness. Stillness exists in spite of movement. Traditional “doing” techniques are successful only when the mind gets tired and momentarily gives up doing the prescribed technique. At the moment it gives up, the mind stops. It is when the mind stops working that it discovers stillness waiting with open arms. The EuStillness Technique skips the getting tired part and goes right to stillness. The EuStillness Technique is a kind of shift in perception from doing to being that is so natural that relaxation and inner peace are the immediate result, followed quickly by measurable levels of healing and, later, even more profound results. I did not set out to develop a simple, scientific technique. It just appeared one day in seed form; all I had to do was let it germinate and grow.

52
Q

OK, so what this means in plain language is I stumbled upon a way to do nothing. You heard me right: do nothing. It gets better. It turns out that doing nothing is necessary if anything is to get done. I know it sounds crazy, but it’s true. In fact, it has always been true. If we want to do anything we must always start by going in the opposite direction first. Sounds bizarre? Think about it. If you want to get out of that chair you are sitting in then what is the first thing you must do? That’s right! You must first push down with your feet and hands if you want to stand up . If you then choose to walk to your fridge for a cold drink, you must first push your foot in the opposite direction from the fridge so that you will move forward toward that beer in the icebox. If you want to drive a nail you begin by moving the hammer in the opposite direction. If you want to build a skyscraper you start by digging a hole. Now here comes the do- nothing part. When you stop going in the opposite direction and just before you go forward you are completely at rest, aren’t you? When your foot is done pushing backward and just before it swings forward, it is at rest. When you raise the hammer back it stops just before you swing it forward. You see, doing nothing is built into every activity.

A

To do the EuStillness Technique you must first become aware of Eufeeling. To become aware of Eufeeling you must first become aware of pure awareness. You became aware of pure awareness when you watched the screen of your mind in The Nothing Technique.
