Flouride Flashcards
What are 3 good sources of flouride
–Sea food
–Fish with bones
–Tea
Where does Most of our fluoride intake comes from
Water
How much flouride does
Tea contain
1 to 6 mg per liter (decaf more)
What is he RDA for flouride
RDA is 3-4 mg per day
What are the 3 functions of flouride
Stimulates osteoblast proliferation and mineral deposition in bone (children)
Aids in formation of dental enamels
Fluoride is part of hydroxyfluorapatite, (which is less soluble in acid than hydroxyapatite)
In what 3 ways does fluoride prevent dental caries?
–Increases resistance of enamel to acid attack (by buffering hydrogen ions)
–Promotes remineralization of incipient enamel lesions (from normal mastication of foods containing carbs)
–Inhibits bacterial enzymes such as enolase which leads to decreased acid production by bacteria
What are 2 Symptoms of chronic flouride toxicity
- Mottling of the tooth surface with white or brown spots appearing on the teeth
- Skeletal fluorosis
What is skeletal fluorosis
accumulation of fluoride in the joints, which impairs movement
What is the EPA regulatory limit of flouride
Fluoride must be removed if concentrations exceed 4 mg/L
In what stage of human life does fluoride have a stronger effect on bone proliferation
Children
