Flight Controls Flashcards
What type of flight control system does the aircraft have?
Fly-by-wire (FBW).
What are the two basic modes of operation for the flight controls?
Normal Mode (NM)
Direct Mode (DM)
When will the flight control system revert automatically to DM?
When it is not possible to maintain NM due to multiple system failures.
Is flight under DM recommended? Why or why not?
No, important system protections are only available in NM.
What happens when the AP/PTY button is momentarily pressed?
AP is disengaged.
What happens when the AP/PTY button is pressed for more than 1 second?
The priority annunciation is activated and exclusive control is given to the side stick while the buttons is pressed.
What happens when the AP/PTY button is pressed and held for more than 20 seconds?
The perspective side stick will have exclusive control latched.
If one side stick has been latched out, how can exclusive control be removed?
Press either side stick priority button.
What happens if dual input occurs and priority has not been requested by either pilot?
A tactile warning in each side stick, an aural warning, and the inputs are algebraically summed.
Is side stick controller priority logic available in DM?
No, only in NM.
With the autopilot engaged, what does pressing the TCS button do?
Allows the pilot to manually control the aircraft while the autopilot is engaged.
During normal flight with flaps 3 or full, landing gear down and the AP disengaged, what does pressing the TCS button do?
Resets the TCS trim speed bug.
How can the multifunction spoilers be deployed for use as speed brakes?
With the speed brake lever.
What are the angles of multifunction spoilers that correspond with the speed brake positions?
From 0° to 30°.
When can the Pitch Trim Switch be manually commanded?
On the ground or in DM.
Which button is used to recover NM or to revert to DM in the case of a NM misbehavior?
Press and release the Normal Mode button.
When is manual reversion to DM inhibited?
Low speed protection, high speed protection, or AOA protection.
On the FLIGHT CONTROL synoptic page,what color actuator status indicates that the respective flight control surface is in the normal mode and at least one actuator is engaged?
Green
On the FLIGHT CONTROL synoptic page,what does a yellow actuator status indicate?
It indicates DM and at least one actuator is operational.
When is the side slip target presented by a blue side slip skid indicator?
OEI during takeoff, climb, or GA.
Where is the Low Speed Awareness (LSA) band located? The Pitch Limit Indicators (PLI)?
LSA - Adjacent to the speed tape
PLI - ADI
List the three LSA bands in NM and what they indicate.
Vss - top of the white tape - low speed protection
Vaoa - top of the amber tape - AOA limiter function
Vlim - top of the red tape - airspeed associated with max allowable AOA
Do the Vss and Vaoa/Vlim indications behave the same in turns and other maneuvers? Why or why not?
No, Vss is in terms of speed while Vao/Vlim are related to AOA.
Does Vaoa and Vlim increase with load factor?
Yes
Is the AOA limiter function operational in DM?
No.
List the two bands in DM and what the represent?
Vms - top of amber tape
Vsa - top of red tape - speed where aural stall warning is triggered.
Are the Pitch Limit Indicators (PLI) displayed in DM?
No
What color does the Pitch Limit Indicator become if the airspeed drops below Vaoa in NM? Vlim in NM?
Amber; Red
How many FCCs are sufficient to provide NM functionality?
One.
What is the purpose of the Black Airline Battery?
To withstand operation for a minimum of 15 minutes in order for the flight crew to recover the airplane to proper electrical system operation.
How long does each PBIT of the FCS take?
Less than one minute.
If the PBIT conditions are not satisfied, up to how many PBIT operation attempts can the FCS automatically perform?
Up to three.
During PBIT operation,which CAS message is displayed?
FLTCTRL TEST IN PROG.
When is the de-rotation control law active?
When the airplane touches down.
What does the neutral spiral stability control law provide?
It automatically trims the elevator when the sidestick controller is set back to the neutral position, to maintain the flight level during turns up to a bank angle of 33°.
If the pilot commands a turn with a bank angle of greater than 33°, what needs to be done to maintain level flight in the turn?
Maintain the desired sidestick lateral deflection and move the sidestick controller aft.
List the four conditions that will cause the speed brakes to automatically stow?
– FLAP Lever position is 3 or full ;
– Airspeed is less than 160 kt;
– TLA is greater than 55°;
– The AOA limiter function is engaged.
If the speed brakes are automatically stowed, what indication will the pilots have and how can they be reactivated?
SPDBRK LEVER DISAG;
Speed brake lever must be stowed.
How is manual reversion to DM available if the flight crew detects a NM misbehavior?
NORMAL MODE button press and release.
What do the CLAWs provide?
Protections to prevent the airplane from exceeding the flight envelope limitations.
What are the two flight envelopes for the airplane?
Normal flight envelope and limit flight envelope.
What are the limits of the normal flight envelope?
– 33° bank angle protection;
– High speed protection (VMO);
– Low energy avoidance protection (1.13 VS);
– Pitch Attitude Protection.
What are the limits of the high speed protection envelope?
Vmo +22 kts.
When does pitch attitude protection activate?
30° pitch up
15° pitch down
What does the limit flight envelope require?
Requires more effort to maintain the airplane in this condition.
What are the boundaries/hard limits of the limit flight envelope?
The external boundaries of the limit flight envelope are reached at full control application. The hard limits of this flight envelope are:
– Maximum angle of attack - AOA limiter;
– Airplane structural limits - load factor protection;
– Maximum sideslip protection;
– Dive speed protection.
Is the AP operational in DM?
No.
In DM, how does the airplane behave?
Like a conventional airplane, where sidestick and pedal deflection are directly related to surface position.
