Flexible Grouping Flashcards
Say NO to tracking and homogenous grouping.
This is when students are in groups based solely off standardized testing
They perpetuate inequality
Flexible grouping
IMPORTANT
Similar to differentiation
Fluid
Dynamic
Adaptable
Students of varying ages, backgrounds and abilities are grouped and regrouped to meet learning and instructional goals
Homogeneous Groups
Everyone is the same
Shouldn’t be used regularly
Heterogeneous Groups
Diversity within the group
Grouping students by interest rather than reading scores
In the Classroom
When students who struggle have the opportunity to participate in high - level groups, the struggling students will often rise to the occasion and participate in high-level discussions and activities they may not have participated in if they were confined to only a low-level group
In the Classroom
Struggling students should be grouped by level (homogenous) temporarily for INTERVENTION purposes, but students should participate in heterogeneous groups for classroom activities
